Uchhi Pillaiyar kovil, Trichy




About the temple

Uchi pillayar (உச்சிப் பிள்ளையார் கோயில்) temples is one of the key landmarks of Trichy. This hill temple is dedicated to Lord Ganesha/Vinayaga fondly called in tamil as “Pillayar” (பிள்ளையார்).

There is also a temple deciated to Lord siva ( mid –way in the hill) called Thayumanavaswamy temple.
This temple has a mythologyical story connecting it to the Temple of Srirangam


 

The Tiruchirapalli Rock Fort is a historic fort and temple complex built on an ancient rock. It is located in the city of Tiruchirapalli, which is in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is constructed on a 273-foot high rock. There are two Hindu temples inside the Rockfort, the Uchchi Pillaiyar Koil and the Siva Temple. How to reach

The temple is approximately 1 km from the Trichy chathiram bus stand. The temple is the city's best known landmark.

About the temple

The place Pillaiyarpatti got its name from the word Pillaiyar which means Ganesha in tamil. The temple is famous for the huge 6 ft idol of Karpaga Vinayagar. Vinayaga means incomparable leader and here the lord is said to satisfy all the wishes of the devotees like karpagam tree. The Lord is hence called Karpaga vinayaga. Karpaga Vinayaga here appears with just two hands and his truck turned towards the right. The temple is among the oldest rock cut temples of Tamilnadu. There are also lot more sannadhis in the temple complex like Durgai, Saraswati, Lakshmi, Marundeeswarar and so on. 

How to reach

The temple is close to Karaikudi and Thirupattur on the Thirupattur-Karaikudi state highway. A small diversion on the highway leads one to the huge temple tank. It is also accessible from Madurai and Pudukottai.

By train, the nearest station is Karaikudi at a distance of 13 kms. Trains from Chennai to Rameshwaram stop at Karaikudi Junction.

By air, the nearest airport is Madurai.
