About the temple
The temple is also called Vagulagiri Kshetram and the presiding deity is Sri Venkatachalapathy. The temple is on a small hill and is visible from the main road itself that goes to Tiruchendur. When King Subakandan was praying to Lord Venkateswara in Tirupati to relieve him of the untolerable pain he was suffering in the neck, the Lord is believed to have come in his dream and advised him to built a sandalwood chariot with good quality sandalwood from the nearby forest. The Lord told him that he would prevail in the two sticks that would remain. So, the lord here is in the form of two sandal sticks close to each other. The King was told to take the sticks to Karungulam and place them on the hill appropriately for permanent cure to his disease. The king according placed the sticks besides the existing Srinivasa temple and started worshipping the same. So there are two temples besides each other on this hill.
