Sri Deepa Prakasar Perumal Temple, Thiruthanka (Thoopul)






About the temple

The presiding deity is Sri Deepa Prakasar perumal or Vilakoli perumal in a standing posture. The temple is among the 108 divyadesams of Sri Vaishnavas under Tondai naatu divyadesams. There is a seperate sannadhi for Maragathavalli thayar. Also called Thoopul, it is the avathara sthalam of Sri Vedanta Desikar. There is a big sannadhi for Sri Vedanta Desikar in Gnana muthirai. Sri Desikar's life is depicted in pictures in the prakaram of the sannadhi.



Demons tried to disturb the Yagna being performed by Brahma by darkening the whole world. Lord Vishnu then is believed to have appeared as a bright light to ensure continuity of the yagnam and hence is called Deepa Prakasar and Vilakku oli perumal wherein vilakku oli means brightness in tamil.

How to reach

The temple can be approached by two ways..

1. Drive down straight from the Kanchipuram bus stand towards Varadaraja perumal temple, but dont take the right indicated by the direction board..Instead head straight and after crossing the turn for the SH 116,  you can see a gopuram in a small lane on the left..Go inside and it will lead to the temple

2. Travelling from Bus stand to Varadaraja perumal temple, just before Asthabujagaram temple take a right to Vilakoli temple street and keep travelling almost to the end. You can see the gopuram of Vedanta Desikar sannadhi a little bit inside in the right.

About the temple

The presiding deity of the temple is Sri Vaikuntha perumal with his consorts Sridevi and Bhoomi devi thayar. There is a seperate sannadhi for Sri Kamalavalli thayar. The place is the avathara sthalam of Sri Ramanujar's first cousin Sri Embar. They both were students of Sri Yadavaprakashar at Thirupatkuzhi. It was Sri Embar who saved Sri Ramanujar's life when Yadava Prakasha tried to kill the latter due to difference of opinion over the teachings. After following Shivism for some time, Sri Embar came back as Sri Ramanujar's disciple and followed Vaishnavism till the end. He was the one who taught Parasar bhattar the teachings of Sri Ramanuja to make him Udayavar's successor.

How to reach

The temple is about 65 kms from Chennai and around 20 kms from Sriperumbudur. Coming from Chennai on the Bangalore highway, take a right towards Sunguvar chatram. Then take a right at the Vinayagar temple to reach Madhuramangalam via Maduramangalam road.

Specialty of the temple

Madhuramangalam is the avatar sthalam of Sri Embar.

Sri Embar gives dharsan wearing a pendant given by Sri Udayavar.

The temple is said to be a prarthana sthalam for childless couples.

It is also believed that the Lord here cures all eye ailments if prayed by lighting a ghee lamp.


Pushkarni
The temple tank is called Garuda pushkarni.

About the temple

The presiding deity of the temple is Sri Aadhi Keseva perumal with Sridevi and Bhoomidevi thayar in standing posture. The utsavar is also called by the same name. Kooram is the avathara sthalam of Sri Kooratazhwar.

Kooratazhwar is considered to be the avatara of Sri Rama himself. He is an epitome of humbleness and person with unmatched guru bhakti. Although born into a rich family he gave away all his material wealth and became a shishya of Sri Ramanuja. He helped Ramanuja towards the composition of Sri Bhasyam.

How to reach

Kooram is around 10 kms from Kanchipuram and 77 kms from Chennai. Coming from Chennai on the Bangalore highway, continue going straight after the left turn indicating route to Kanchipuram to reach a flyover. Go below the flyover and take the right turn below the bridge. Then take a left to cross the railway line and continue to reach kooram.

Another route is to go across the flyover and then take a right turn for Kooram

About the Temple

The temple is the abode of Maha Vishnu in the form of Adhikeseva Perumal and the birth place of Sri Ramanujacharya. It is also known as the avatara Sthalam of Swami Ramanujacharya.

The temple doesnt have a swarga vasal since is is believed that praying to Lord Ramanuja is the way to heaven.
